What is FCAC? What do they do / what is their impact?
Foster Care Advocacy Center (FCAC) is a Houston-based nonprofit law firm that provides holistic legal and social services to children and parents involved in the child welfare system. Our work centers on protecting children from harm while also supporting families in safely staying together whenever possible.
Unlike traditional legal representation, FCAC pairs attorneys with social workers and peer advocates so families receive wraparound support both inside and outside the courtroom. While our attorneys handle complex legal matters, our social services team helps families access mental health care, housing, education, support, and community-based resources that are critical to long-term stability.
Each year, FCAC serves more than 400 children and parents across Harris County and surrounding areas, often in the most complex and high-need cases. Our model reduces trauma, shortens time in foster care, and helps families achieve safe reunification or permanency.
Speak to the organization’s “why.” What is FCAC’s mission, or why are you passionate about this work?
FCAC’s mission is to provide holistic advocacy inside and outside the courtroom for children and parents involved in the child welfare system. At its core, our work is about equity, dignity, and ensuring that families are not separated simply because they lack resources or support.
I care deeply about marginalized communities in the greater Houston area, and child welfare legal proceedings sit at a powerful nexus of intersectionality. These cases often involve families who are navigating poverty, racial and economic inequities, disability, mental health challenges, substance use, language barriers, and systemic bias all at once. Too often, families are separated not because of a lack of love or care, but because they lack access to resources and strong advocacy.
What drew me to FCAC is the organization’s clear understanding that the child welfare system does not exist in a vacuum. Social conditions directly shape legal outcomes, and families cannot succeed in court without support beyond it. FCAC’s model acknowledges this reality by pairing attorneys with social workers and peer advocates, so families receive holistic, dignified support.
This work matters to me because when we intervene effectively at this intersection, we do more than resolve a single legal case. We reduce trauma, protect children, preserve families, and challenge the inequities that have existed for generations. That impact ripples far beyond the courtroom and into the future of our community.
